I love borrowing books from my local library so I’m always searching their catalog for things I’m interested in. My “food forest” search lead me to The New American Landscape – Leading Voices on the Future of Sustainable Gardening. What I most love about this book is it’s format. Because it is a gathering of experts in the fields of ecology, horticulture, soil biology, landscape design, permaculture, bio-instensive farming, etc… it really hits home for me on so many levels. This multi-angle attach synthesizes from the soil (managing soil health) to the roof (green roofs) and everywhere in between what can be done to shape our own yards into ecologically contributing spaces. I highly recommend this book for sustainable landscape beginners and experienced gardeners alike.

Anyone who knows me, knows I love to learn new things. I am the perennial student studying not only perennials but arboriculture, irrigation design and now I’m adding Permaculture. I’ve been dipping my toe in this subject for some time and now I’ve finally dived into an intensive certification course at the LA Arboretum. Permaculture is essentially the use of sustainable design principles in the creation of human habitats. The design process takes it’s cues from the natural world were systems are self-sustaining and abundant. This illustration shows elements of Permaculture: food production, water reclamation and diversion, harnessing of the sun’s energy and the thoughtful placement of crops based on micro climates. There’s actually a lot going on under the soil too!
I think what I’m most excited about is the amazing sense of community in this movement. In fact, you cannot practice Permaculture alone – it requires you to tap into the community. At my first 8 hour class, I found myself surrounded by people who want to make a difference in our world of global warming, mass food production and lack of exposure to nature and it’s abundance. I really don’t know where this will lead me but I’m just so thrilled to be on this path because I know it’s a positive one. I’ll keep you posted 🙂
Last August I finally acted on a long time urge to get some high quality bird feeders in my garden. I was just leaving Arrowhead with my family after a week at Bruinwoods UCLA family camp when I spied a cute little store that was all about birds. I had just that week repaired a fountain that had been broken and it was now running – would this do the trick? It did! I soon had lots of birds. Now my challenge is keeping the feeders full and the cats in “observation only” distance. We have our feeders hung so that they are viewable from our family room sofa. I also have hummingbird feeders hung just outside my kitchen sink. It’s nice to have visitors.
